If you are running on Pervasive, rebuild the Pervasive database
It's totally safe, and it does nothing to structures. All it does is dump out and freshly reload the tables to rebuild the indexes. The files can't be in use while it's running. If there are any problems with the rebuild, it skips the file and moves to the next one.
Increase the size of your RAM on the server and workstations and increase your Pervasive Cache size
With each new revision of Windows and of ACCPAC there are more features that take more overhead to run. Put as much RAM in your Server as it will take and increase the size of your Pervasive Cache to 2GB.
Install ACCPAC workstation files for each workstation in use.
Install the workstation files on each of the workstations in use. This will eliminate the need to drag program files across the network and can dramatically decrease the traffic that your server has to deal with.
Check to see if everyone is experiencing the same issue. If so, then it’s a server/network issue, if not then it’s isolated to the workstation.
Review the RAM on the workstation – adding RAM can give you the single largest boost in speed.
Do a workstation install to reduce the number of files that need to be pulled from the server
Review other applications that are running in memory and identify any that can be terminated on a permanent basis.
Clean out your inbox
If you have every email that you ever received in your inbox then cleaning them up may provide you with some relief
Free up disk space with the Windows Disk Cleanup tool
Windows Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk to improve the performance of your computer. The tool identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.
Speed up access to data with Disk Defragmenter
Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened to piece it back together. The response time can be significantly longer.
Disk Defragmenter is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end-to-end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.
Detect and repair disk errors
In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your computer, you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.
Protect your computer against spyware
Spyware collects personal information without letting you know and without asking for permission. From the Web sites you visit to usernames and passwords, spyware can put you and your confidential information at risk. In addition to privacy concerns, spyware can hamper your computer's performance. To combat spyware, you might want to consider using one of the many free anti-spyware software programs available.
Learn all about ReadyBoost
If you're using Windows 7 or Vista, you can use ReadyBoost to speed up your system. A new concept in adding memory to a system, it allows you to use non-volatile flash memory—like a USB flash drive or a memory card—to improve performance without having to add additional memory.
Remove unwanted programs
Removing unneeded or unwanted programs from your computer should also be on your checklist. These unnecessary programs can keep your computer running fast by taking up space and resources. From the Control Panel select Add/Remove Programs or Uninstall a Program in Vista. Look over the list of currently installed programs, select each one you want to remove one at a time and click Uninstall. Follow the prompts to remove each program. |
